Most lumps are benign — but every lump is evaluated

Fibroadenomas, cysts and fibrocystic changes are far more common than cancer. A hard, painless lump with irregular edges, or one that appeared after 40, deserves prompt evaluation. Pain alone is rarely a sign of cancer.

How the lump is studied

Clinical examination of both breasts and armpits, bilateral breast ultrasound and, depending on age and findings, a mammogram. If imaging is suspicious (BI-RADS 4 or 5), an ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy gives a definitive diagnosis, usually within the same week.

What the biopsy is like

Local anesthesia, ultrasound guidance, 20 to 30 minutes, no hospital stay. The pathology report takes about a week. A needle biopsy does not spread cancer; it is the international standard before any treatment.

If it is benign

Fibroadenomas and cysts are monitored with ultrasound or removed in an outpatient procedure when they grow, hurt or bother you. Abscesses are drained. You leave with a clear plan, not with doubt.
